Get a Horse

They’re saying “Get a Horse!”

Hey

Back in the day when..

Automobiles were just coming into the public eye.

Perhaps before the days of the Model T and the assembly line.

Some guy was driving down the road in his motor-powered carriage.

He was a tad ahead of the game.

The small minds gathered on the dirt side-walk… shouted…

“Go get a horse!”

In the early 90’s those same small minds predicted the “internet was a fad.”

There is a photo, circa year 2000, that shows Bill Clinton standing next to AOL founder, Steve Case as they both watch a kid in school sign on to the internet. It was a big deal back then!

Think about that photo-opp and how it was only sixteen years ago.

As I did middle school orientation last night for my incoming sixth grader the Principal told us the kids are allowed to have their electronics at lunch time. So my daughter will be sporting her iPhone 6s at lunch I’m sure. I have already warned her to engage in real conversation with her peers. She’s a smart and social kid, so we’re good.

How things have changed.

I still encourage clients to test targeted direct mail to warm prospects… BUT… overall print is dead. The eyeballs are not reading newspapers.

Yellow Pages (and other phonebook companies) are hanging by a thread, while offering digital marketing services (contracts!) and websites that usually come up short.

The phonebook has been dead for years. (But hey… if you still get calls from it keep doing it and negotiate the lowest rate in history)

Search…

Google now tracks a trend that has taken off…

More and more searches for local businesses are done via voice command on smartphones.

Social…

Facebook is the boss.

Pretty soon… ads will be even more targeted.

Facebook is working on artificial inelegance that can better read updates and comments in real time and then help us target ads to those users.

Example…

FB Post: “Crap, hot-water broke. Guess it’s cold showers tonight.”

The ad that will hit right away will be the plumber who understands how this works.

FB Post: “Finally, a date night with the Mrs. Any recommendations on a good place to eat?”

The ad from the local restaurant who understands Facebook Ads will get a shot at that guest.

FB Post: “That’s it, we’re eating healthier now.”

The ad from the fitness program reminding the person how healthy eating and exercise combined produce the best results.

It is time.

Time to make sure your web presence is up to the challenge.
